The standard treatment for hypothyroidism is thyroid replacement hormones. The doctor will typically prescribe the hormones and adjust them until the lab values look “normal”.

Doctors tend to consider gluten sensitivity as diagnosis only after ruling out all sorts of gastrointestinal conditions.  In other words testing for celiac and gluten sensitivity comes after the fact.

 

Sadly, gluten sensitivity test is also put into a nice neat little compartment…Celiac Disease.  If it’s not Celiac Disease then you probably have IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome).  That is a bunch of bunk.

 

Here is why.  Typical testing involves the following markers:  Alpha-Giadin IgA / IgG and Transglutaminase IgA / IgG.  If these are positive then an intestinal biopsy is generally performed to confirm intestinal damage and the presence of Celiac Disease.  The issue is, these tests can be falsely negative leading to the assumption that gluten is not the problem.

 

Fortunately, there is a newer lab, Cyrex that has taken gluten sensitivity testing to another level.  They incorporate 24 markers versus the 4 standard markers when evaluating for gluten sensitivity.

 

Imagine there is a 5-year-old girl lost in the woods.  Would you rather have 4 people or 24 people looking for her?  Of course, your odds of success are so much greater with almost 6 times the people.

 

Do not get me wrong more markers doesn’t mean you create a problem that isn’t there or look for issues so miniscule they don’t really matter.  Better testing means better chance of being accurate.

This week I began my journey back to school.  I had asked you for information on schools for nutrition in previous emails.  I decided to enroll at the Integretative Institute for Nutrition in New York.  I will receive certificates from them and the State University of New York – Purchase College next September.  I will be a certified Health Coach. Yea!!  I would not be embarking on this journey had I not stepped into your office in July 2010.  I didn’t realize how much diet impacted my autoimmune disease.  As I learned more about gluten and its affects, the more I craved to learn about it. Much of the information I read was confusing and conflicting, however I was determined to get it right.  I have lost almost 20 pounds and my thyroid medicine has been reduced from 112 mcg to 88 mcg.  My next blood test is next week.  I am hoping it will even go down further.
I am excited to be going to school and feel like my life’s going in the right direction.  Thank you for all that you do.  I wouldn’t be doing what I am without your help.
